Senior of the Year

This time last year I was nervous as I was sitting up here,
For I had been nominated as Senior of the Year.
I listened with admiration when each submission was read,
For each one deserved to win as the glowing words were read.

I began to think they'd forgotten that I was sitting here too!
Then last of all I heard the call as someone whispered “It's you!”
So I came to the front all trembling and in my eye a tear
For lo! And behold! I was chosen to be Senior of the Year!

The lovely plaques are now treasured; I wear the gold watch with pride;
And I used the Oakville Transit more often because I get a free ride!
When I have a “senior moment” or forget somewhere I should go,
I can say “Well, I'm entitled, for I'm Senior of the Year, you know”

I want to say what a blessing this year has proved to be,
For I never expected this honour to be awarded to me.
I thank every one at the Centre who has brought my heart such cheer,
To represent all you fine people as Senior of the Year.

May I add my congratulations to those nominated today,
For I'm sure they are all deserving of being recognized this way.
And I wish to my successor, the fortunate volunteer,
Good health and may God bless you as the new Senior of the Year!
